Paige Donovan is an ambitious college graduate who aspires to reach the top of the corporate ladder. She’s climbing fast when given the promotion of a lifetime at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City. Her bright future comes to an unexpected halt after news of her father’s death. She inherits his old cabin in the Colorado Rockies, and just when she thinks her luck couldn’t get any worse, she has a car accident in the mountains and awakens in the small, remote community of Black River.

Soon, she’s engulfed in the mystical world of Varulv—wolves descended from 13th century Scandinavia and blessed by Norse gods with the ability to appear human. Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack.

Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

I had passed this book up on several occasions, and when it was sent in it's own e-mail that's when I decided to go ahead, and pick-it up. I'm not normally into paranormal/shifter romances, but this one pleasantly pleased me. I was able to get into the story, and really enjoy the characters (who were well developed), and the plot line that flowed seamlessly from one scene to the next. There were a few parts that I wasn't overly fond of, but I think it was just because this isn't my normal genre that I go for.

Paige had everything she could ever want in life. A promotion. A loving boyfriend. A family that was divided, yet united. She had it all. Or, so she thought. One domino falling usually means the path of life will come in three's. A cheating boyfriend. A father who passes away. Unexpected leave from the job of her dreams. Life isn't fair, and Paige quickly realizes it. Returning to the cabin left to her by her deceased father, Paige makes the difficult trek up to the small village in the Rocky Mountains. Nestled away in the most unexpected places is a small town that holds many, many legends, and secrets.

This novel will have you wanting more of the beta trying to be alpha male who swoops in from Paige's long distant past. Riley will make you wonder if there really are Norse werewolves wandering somewhere in the cold, snow-capped mountains of Colorado. But this novel will also leave you wanting to turn the pages quicker, and quicker with every small twist, and every small secret that begins to find its way out of the dense forest. A bright 4 Bars to April Bostic on a clever twist to a difficult genre to write.

I didn't sleep peacefully, because the sound of whimpering awakened me. I opened my eyes to see Riley suffering a nightmare. He panted rapidly. His wolf body twitched, and his head jerked against the pillow. I propped myself on my elbow and touched him gently to rouse him.

"Riley, wake up," I whispered in the darkness.

His glowing yellow eyes shot open. Then, he blinked a few times before he settled them on me. He flashed into his human form, still breathing fast. The moonlight revealed a thin sheen of sweat covering his naked torso.

I combed his hair with my fingers, the pads of my fingertips massaging his scalp. "It's okay, baby. You were just having a nightmare."

He was breathless, his wolf eyes wide with fear, almost as if he was reliving the nightmare awake. "I saw Mum. We were running from the hunters. She was right behind me. This time, I thought I saved her. Then, I heard a gunshot. I turned around, and she was gone."

He closed his eyes, and a pained expression crossed his face. When he opened them, the amber color glistened with unshed tears.

His voice cracked when he said, "Every time I try and save her, they take her from me." He paused, and his lips trembled. "I still see the hunters’ faces. They laugh and hoist my mother up like a prize." Tears leaked from his eyes, and I instinctively gathered him in my arms and kissed the top of his head. His voice had lost all of its strength as he wept. "I miss her so much."

I rubbed his back to soothe him. I felt his pain, because I shared it, too.
