"Without trust, we have nothing."
These are the words which have haunted Melanie Erickson for six years. When she walked out of the house Xavier Ross bought as their forever home, she thought she was closing that door permanently, but fate had other plans.
Xavier Ross tried to keep everyone at a distance until Melanie came into his life. The more he tried to fight his feelings for her, the more he fell in love. One rash decision fractured the trust that was essential to their relationship.
Six years later, she is the last person he expects to see walk through his front door. Will Xavier and Mel be able to learn to trust one another again so they can fulfill a dying woman’s wish?

This story is Sloan Johnson's opus.  This story spoke to me, it tore my heart open and left me raw and then it stitched me back together.  It had it all.  The only thing maybe the story didn't have a lot of was sex and I can overlook that here because that's not what this story was about.

Fragile Bonds follows the lives of Melanie, Xavier and his wife Alyssa.  Melanie was once Xavier Ross' whole world.  She was his submissive but above all she was the only woman he was ever going to love.  Xavier always told Melanie, "Without trust, we have nothing" and it was because of this that their bond was severed.  So, imagine Xavier's surprise when his four year old son, Jacob, is letting a face he never thought he'd ever see again back into their home.  The same home that Xavier bought for Melanie all those years ago.  Rage fills him but cooler heads prevail when he finds out why she's there.  She's there as the end of life caregiver for his wife Alyssa.  Of course both of them after coming face to face after all these years consider throwing in the towel and calling the agency and telling them to assign someone else to Alyssa's care.  But neither of them can bring themselves to do it.  Over time, Xavier realizes Melanie is exactly who his wife needs in her life and exactly what Xavier and Jacob need to get them through the most difficult thing they will ever deal with, losing a wife and mother.

Now based on the synopsis for the book there is no spoiler here that Alyssa dies.  There isn't magical powder that can save you from Leukemia even in the world of fiction unfortunately.  These characters are gutted when the time comes to say goodbye and they will take you right along with them over the edge.  Bring tissues because you're definitely going to need them, especially if you're a Mom like I am.  I bawled like a baby thinking about leaving my babies behind.  Their father would be a great single father, don't get me wrong but every child should have both of their parents in their lives, living!  Xavier is no exception to this, he's a fantastic father, but he wasn't always hands on, he's scare to death that he's going to screw up Jacob's life now that Alyssa's guiding hand is not there to pick up the slack.

The rest of the story is complex ... while it would be easy for Xavier and Melanie to honor a dying woman's last request, for them to be together and for them to make sure that Jacob always has both of them in their lives, they feel varying levels of guilt at even considering being with one another again after Alyssa's death.  Is the past better left in the past and if so,  can Melanie walk away knowing that she's in love with not only Xavier after all these years but also in love with his little boy as well?  You'll have to read to find out how the story ends!

As I said before, this is Sloan's opus.  Hands down, the best story she has written to date (at least that I've read).  I'm assured there is more where this came from and I hope that's true because I'm already desperate for her next truly heartwarming read!  Bravo madame, you have my love and deep admiration for this story, the characters and for the love they brought to each others lives in a time of need.  We should all be so lucky to have that love and to get a second chance in our lives.
