In the new Mastered series by New York Times bestselling author Lorelei James, a woman’s desire to shatter her inhibitions leaves her unprepared for where that erotic journey will take her….

Former small-town girl Amery Hardwick is living her dream as a graphic designer in Denver, Colorado. She’s focused on building her business, which leaves little time for dating—not that she needs a romantic entanglement to fulfill her. When her friend signs up for a self-defense class as part of her recovery after an attack, Amery joins her for support. That’s where she meets him.

Ronin Black, owner of the dojo, is so drawn to Amery that he takes over her training—in public and in private. The enigmatic Ronin pushes Amery’s boundaries from the start, and with each new tryst, Amery becomes addicted to the pleasure and to him. But when Amery senses Ronin is hiding something, she questions her total trust in him, despite the undeniable thrill of his possession….

I can’t describe how much I enjoyed this book! Ronin & Amery……OMG both characters are so amazing.

Amery Hardwick is a preacher’s daughter and was raised with a mother that put extreme importance on how things looked to the people of the church. Ever the pastor’s wife, Amery wasn’t allowed to do anything that was remotely frowned upon by the church. Every decision was based on what the bible thought first and what the congregation would think second. It would take Amery a long time during her adulthood to figure out what she wanted……other people be damned. To find and be herself has been a journey she still struggles with.

Ronin Black is probably the most complicated and secretive man (character) I’ve ever had the privilege to read. He’s a son, a brother, a businessman, a sensei master…..among other things. I say he’s secretive but it’s more that he keeps himself closed off and he has many reasons for that. Although, it becomes harder and harder to keep things from Amery.

Amery shows up at his Dojo ready to watch her friend learn some basic self defense lessons. She’s there for moral support after she was attached and became scared. Neither knew a major rule of the Dojo was no observing. The only way for her to enter is to actually take the class. This puts the numbers uneven so she has to pair up with none other than the Dojo owner, Master Black.

What will happen when Master Black puts Amery through her paces? Can Amery let herself be herself and not let her upbringing keep her from something that can be really great? Will she get her heart broken if Ronin can’t give her what she wants most…..all of himself?

One of the things he doesn’t broadcast to Amery is his ability with rope. He is a master at the art of Shibari and Kinbaku bondage. How will she feel about this side of him? Will she submit to him completely and let him use his ropes on her?

“Being in pain is the story of my life. These hands have been broken, bruised, bloodied, scabbed, and sarred. I’ve hurt people with these hands.” Ronin dropped his head and stared at his hands, turning them over to look at the palms. He curled his fingers in and then stretched them our. “When I realized I had a knack for ropes, I wanted to find balance between using my hands for pain as well as beauty. I wanted to create something beautiful, even if it was as fleeting as pain. I’ll never be an artist in traditional mediums, but with a rope in my hands and a vision in my head, I become an artist.”
Amery let his words flow through her and it set something inside her free. This man was beauty. She dropped to her knees in front of him. Ronin’s surprised eyes hooked hers.
She took his right hand in her left, threading their fingers together until their palms met. Then she brought his left hand to her mouth, letting her lips drift across his ravaged knuckles. She pressed hisses on the back of his hand, the joint of his thumb, and the tips of his fingers. Then she pressed his hand to the side of her face. “I think our scarred hands are beautiful……"

This is a fantastic book! Just amazing. Way to go Lorelei James!!!!! What a great beginning to what I know is going to be an epic series!!! Can’t wait for the next book, Unwound on March 25……I’ll be getting that day and diving in!!!
