When I was a boy, I met a girl.
She didn’t know it then, but…
She changed me.

Now…..I am a man.
A man who is broken by the stories of the women who come to me.
They are my birds with broken wings.
I help them heal, help them to make them strong, so they can fly free.
Lark changed me. Loved Me. Made Me Strong.
With her, I am free.

I write…
To the girl of the past.
To the girl of my present.
And, the girl of my future.

Dear Dish….

**Although Nico is considered part of The Leaves Series, it can be read as a stand alone**

What a fantastic story!  Seriously, if you aren't reading J.B. Hartnett's series, The Leaves, you need to go out and pick up all three books.  I've not read the first two but if her character development, suspense and story telling ability in Nico are any indication of the first two in this series, I'd be shocked if they weren't 5 bar reads as well!

Nico is a dark story but a powerful one just the same.  A little boy witnesses the death of a woman right in front of his face and vows to take away their pain from that day forward.  He is touched by a little girl he'll for the rest of his life refer to as "Dish" whose mother was the woman that died in front of them.  Helping Dish through that painful night took away the nightmares that he had all his life till he was nine years old.  Later in life he becomes a tattoo artist in Laguna Beach who helps the women he lovingly refers to as his "birds", the women who have had inexplicably horrible, heinous acts done to them.  This is the darkness of the story.  Some of it is hard to read but J.B. never goes into too much depth of each of their stories.  She gives you just enough so you can see Nico's connection to each of them and why he feels compelled to help them.

Nico turns to booze and women to deal with his problems.  He'd rather drink himself silly and bury his dick in any woman he can find or even multiple women in one night than deal with the burden he bears for his birds.  He's been thinking about his "Dish" all his life.  But it takes one horrible act of violence caused at the hands of one of his birds husbands to snap him out of his miserable existence.  He realizes that there has to be more to life than this.  His father helps him of course, Pops has got to be one of the best parental characters out there!  The man is hilarious and the two of them together add a lot of the comic relief to Nico's sad, dark and pain filled life. He realizes he needs someone to share his pain with, like his father did after finding his wife.  Then Nico meets Lark, a woman almost as twisted up on the inside as some of his birds.  She's a tough one to crack and has a lot of demons she'd rather not talk about by throwing up her "white flag" but eventually they are both forced to face their past to reconcile their demons.

Again, this was just an amazing story.  I didn't expect the suspense or the darkness but I loved it all the same.  I will definitely be picking up the first two books in the series and hopefully be reviewing them soon for all of you to read!

Julie is a Southern California native, a fan of a really good story (preferably romance with a happily ever after), really good pie (preferably pumpkin) and copious amounts of coffee (preferably Folgers).

She has always enjoyed writing and at one time thought she could be a singer songwriter...the 'writer' part is the one that stuck.

Julie is obsessed with pi...the equation(and the food). She's allergic to cats and cantaloupe and hates if you ever want to give her a gift, those are out for sure. She currently lives with her own romance hero husband and two boys in Melbourne, Australia.
