Alexander is an ex-Marine, ex-cop, and the top investigator in his field. Melissa Jones is a small-town girl trying to escape her troubled past.

When the two intersect in a bar in Arizona, their sexual chemistry is off the charts. But what is revealed during their "one week stand" only complicates matters.

Because she'll do everything in her power to get away from the past, but he'll do everything he can to hold her.

When I first started reading this book I found it hard to get into.  It starts off with Melissa and her best friend Elaine at a spa resort in Arizona. Melissa is in the bar at the resort when Derek approaches her and introduces himself.  He offers to buy her a drink, and she tells him that she already has one. Derek then tells her that he has been watching her across the bar and knows that she doesn't like what she has ordered. He quickly orders a bottle of Cava wine for them.  Melissa is quickly taken by Derek's appearance which is very unusual for her.  The more they talk the more she becomes turned on.  She tells him that her best friend thought that a weeks vacation could help her change her life or at least her outlook.  Melissa immediately debates internally if she wants to go there with Derek or not.  After a bit of time passes he offers to take her to a private patio.  She agrees to go and they have a very hot and steamy hook up.  After this in the book I am wondering where the story is going.... or is this a book just about sex.

Well, as I continue to read further and get more involved with the characters, I start to find the actual story taking place.  Melissa and Elaine go to one of the restaurants for lunch.  As they are waiting to be served they meet Patrick Knight, who Elaine is very interested in.  He introduces himself and says that he is waiting to meet his boss.  Melissa quickly realizes who his boss is and makes an excuse as to why they can't stay.  Patrick quickly invites them to dinner where Elaine hastily accepts for them.  When they get to dinner Melissa is introduced to Patrick's boss, who turns out to be none other than Derek.  Once they are seated Melissa quickly says that she is not feeling well and goes to leave.  Derek follows her, offers to see her up to her room, and instead they end up in a family bathroom where again they have hot steamy sex against the wall.  After this second encounter they have dinner and agree to a one week hook up.  The following night over dinner conversations Patrick tells them that Derek teaches a few classes at Princeton.  Melissa states that she done some work for a client at Princeton once, who was Sloan Reynolds.  Immediately she regrets her statement.  Derek tells her that he had enjoyed their afternoon together and was caught off guard by how intense it was. At this point Melissa comes to the realization that she is falling in love with Derek very quickly but knows that it can't go any further than what it is.  They day that Melissa and Elaine go to leave Derek gives Melissa a small gold chain with a heart pendent on it with a note that says "what I would give you if you hadn't already stolen it."  Melissa tears up and thinks to herself that he would survive without his heart because he had hers in its place.

Melissa leaves for home with the hopes and thoughts that maybe there is a chance that her and Derek can once again be together.  This is where the story takes a swift turn...

She lands at the airport and is greeted by a driver telling her that Mr. Reynolds said that she would be needing a ride home.  Her stomach immediately clinches because she knows that Sloan, her husband, knows where she had been and she worries how much her really knows.  Melissa then thinks back to the story of how her marriage has ended up in the condition that it is in and why she can not wait until the day that her divorce if finalized.  After she has been home for a short while Sloan breezes into her room as if he didn't think she was there, while knowing all the better.   He greets her in a very snarky way with the statement of "I do love your flair for the dramatic"..Brava.  He then tried to act hurt that she didn't tell him where she was going.  He brings up that he was served the divorce papers and he would have his lawyer look them over, as she stated that she didn't want anything from him but the divorce.  Over the next several weeks Melissa continues her progress with getting everything ready for her pending move and final split from Sloan.  As Melissa's final days drew closer for her move, she became more nervous as to what Sloan would do to her.  She was now aware of how violent he could be.  Sloan confronts Melissa with why would she possibly want a divorce, how much he detest divorces.  Melissa's reply is that she doesn't believe in husbands raping their wives either, and his reply is that she should not have tried to fight him.  He then tells her that no matter where she goes he will always know where she is and what she is doing.  One the day that Melissa is leaving Sloan she goes to his office and pulls the lists of escorts that he has used in order to have leverage to get him to sign to the divorce.  What she doesn't expect to find is the very person Sloan had used to track her was none other than Derek.

Once Elaine arrives to get Melissa, she informs her that she wants to go up to Princeton.  When they get there Melissa goes into Derek's office where his back is to her and he says " I don't know how you do it Patrick, I can't stop thinking about" then he turned and say Melissa.  He jumps up and starts towards her when she tells him to stop.  He tells her how happy he is to see her, but she tells him to hold that thought.  She starts off with how he seems to know her ex-husband and how he seems to have done some work for him recently in Arizona. She then starts to tell him her side of the story including the print outs of Sloan's use of the escort service and then included the pictures of her after he beat her and tried to rape her.  At that she tells Derek to stay away from her and to never come near her again and leaves.  As the weeks go by and turn into months Melissa still misses Derek, but refuses to talk of him.  One night over dinner Elaine tells Melissa that she is still talking with Patrick and that Derek is watching Sloan and is still very much in love with her.  The afternoon her final divorce papers arrive her mom is with her.  The spend the afternoon and evening celebrating.  Melissa's mom tells her that she realized that she had been broken and how she wished that she had known because she would have stood behind her decisions more.  That night after her mom leaves Melissa starts getting ready for bed when she hears a noise in her kitchen.  She goes in and is greeted by none other than Sloan.  When she asks why he is there  he tells her that they need to have a proper good-bye.   She knows that if it turns physical he will over power her so she takes another tactic and goes with it.  She stays calm and tries to keep light conversation going between them all the while keeping a distance.  She decides to go get them a drink and when she does she is grabbed by Derek.  He lets her know it is him and that he will protect her. Sloan starts getting restless and proceeds to attack her for lack of a better explanation.  Derek then appears and takes Sloan out.  After all of this, Melissa decides that Derek is in fact her knight in shining armor.  I am going to leave the story here, because you need to have some surprises as to what happens next.

This story made me not only stop to think, but to remember how easily it is for someone to be in an abusive relationship.  I was glad that even though this book did not grab me from the beginning that I stayed with it and continued to read on, because the story was actually a really good one.  As for the sex...It was off the charts hot...OMG.. did I need my BOB during this story..I did.

Tia Louise is a former journalist, world-traveler, and collector of beautiful men (who inspire ALL of her stories... *wink*)---turned wife, mommy, and novelist.

It's possible she has a slight truffle addiction. And she will never look at a family restroom the same way again.

ONE TO HOLD is her debut adult romance.
