✳ REVIEW

Some of you may have heard or seen me make mention of Author Karen Amanda Hooper on our Facebook page or here on the Blog a time or two. For those of you who have never read her work, you definitely need to start and I can’t stress that enough. Dangerous Depths is the second book in the Sea Monster Memoirs series which was two years in the making of Karen’s blood, sweat and tears and it shows in every word she wrote.

The story picks up shortly after Tangled Tides ends. A relative peace has settled over Rathe and Yara is now Medusa’s eyes and ears in this new realm the Sea Monsters call home. But peace doesn’t last long for our favorite trio. Yara and Treygan get the unfortunate news that Rownan is overcome with grief, that he is off to do something entirely foolish to save the only woman he has ever loved. He believed his wife, Vienna, would have stayed behind waiting for the last eighteen years to be reunited with him. He hoped he wasn’t too late, that his time in Earth’s realm would not have led her to another’s arms. But what has happened to Vienna is a fate worse than death for Rownan. Vienna, torn with grief after Rownan got separated from her and ended up on Earth, chose to find another way into Rathe. She has chosen to travel a path that nobody is believed to have ever returned from. Fearing the worst, Rownan decides to go after her and Yara and Treygan feel obligated to travel with him to bring Vienna home.

Though Nixie tries to talk Yara out of her decision to help Rownan on this foolish quest, Yara won't listen.  She feels that with all of her new abilities, she could be Rownan's trump card and could turn the tide and bring Vienna home, no matter how lost the cause may seem.   But don’t let that optimism fool you because there are plenty of pessimistic times as they embark on their journey.  The journey is dark, the task is daunting but our hero/heroines will need their wits about them and a lot of positive, happy energy to bring them home the recesses of Harte.
Karen does an amazing job with character development.  Her characters are dynamic and ever developing.  They fly off the page, grab your shirt and demand your attention.  I didn’t want to do anything except keep my eyes on the page and just kept hoping everyone would return unscathed.  The suspense she builds is wholly worthy of nail biting and a really twisted tummy as you worry over her characters well-being along the way. I hate when the characters I love are tormented emotionally and physically, I want sunshine, daisies and happily ever after’s but after reading both of Karen’s series now, I hold on to the hope that we’re getting there.  Peace never lasts long and turmoil is ongoing but I keep what Koraline says in mind as our character’s fall to torment … “Never give up, for that is the place and time that the tide will turn.”

✳ DELETED SCENE

Treygan & Yara - Told from Yara's POV
“Speaking of questions.” Treygan reached across the table and held my hand. “How are you handling all these changes? I’ve been worried about all your different instincts constantly tugging at you.”
“What do you mean?” I knew what he meant, but I wasn’t ready to admit I was having a hard time handling my conflicting sea monster sides.
“It can be difficult for me to keep my gorgon side in check sometimes. When I was young it was nearly impossible. You haven’t even had a week to adjust to major changes within yourself. It concerns me.”
“What concerns you, exactly?”
“Traveling to Harte. A place where the strongest and most secure soul would have a hard time keeping it together, and you’re going through a big adjustment period.”
“I’m secure and strong.”
His eyebrows lifted. “I didn’t say you weren’t. I only meant you’re gone through major adjustments. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
I rolled the fruit back and forth on the table, focusing on it instead of Treygan. Sometimes, when we looked into each other’s eyes, it seemed like he could read my mind. I didn’t want him to see how doubtful I was of my own abilities, or how I worried I’d never adequately fill the role I agreed to inherit from Medusa. “It’s tiring at times. My mer side craves the suns, my selkie side craves the moons, when I’m too warm I crave cold, when I’m cold I crave warmth.”
“If it’s anything like what I went through, it will eventually balance itself out. It just takes time.”
“So what’s it like if it’s balanced? Doesn’t one side always win out?”
“No, for me I usually teeter in the middle between mer and gorgon. How can I describe it?” He rocked his chair back while thinking about it. “I’m comfortably numb.”
“Numb?” I let my head fall against my forearm on the table. “That sounds so…blah.”
“Let me try to describe it better.” His eyes searched the air above him. “Back on Eden’s Hammock, you had really hot days and some cold days, correct?”
“Kind of cold. I’ve heard about places where it snows, but I never experienced that.”
“Okay, well did you ever have days that you didn’t think about the weather at all because it wasn’t too warm or too cold?”
“Yes, because most of the year it was comfortable weather.”
“There you go,” Treygan said. “Eventually you’ll get to that point. When you don’t give any thought to your warm or cold side because the place in-between will feel so natural.” His fingers traced a vine hallmark running up the inside of my arm. “Like being with me. At first, you were internally battling your feelings about me, but now it feels natural for us to be together.”
I smirked, enjoying the feel of his touch as always. “There was no battle. I was attracted to you even when you were brooding and acting like an ass.”
He laughed. “You hid your feelings well.”
“So did you. If I hadn’t asked you to kiss me, who knows where we’d be right now.”
“That’s the thing about fate, you can’t fight it. What’s meant to be will be. Just like your new abilities, and like us.”
Silently thanking fate, I leaned in and kissed him.
