Sometimes rules must be broken.

Sometimes your beliefs are challenged.

Other times... you just have to follow your heart.

For Marine Corps Sgt. Alex Cruz, the Corps' rules and regulations have served as a blueprint for how he should live his life. In his mind, the way to maintaining proper conduct and order relied heavily on the ability of the individual to follow orders without question. Alex was that individual.

Pfc. Cassie Bennett.

She is brand new to the Corps, looking to cement a place in the world for herself after breaking free from the oppressive life she's lived with her mother. Making it in the Corps is her way of showing her mother that she is more than she thinks she is, while also proving to herself she can survive one of life's biggest challenges.

Both Alex and Cassie are tested when an intensely strong attraction develops between them. They feel it, they want it, but one thing stands in their way... The Marine Corps order on Fraternizing. Their lust filled thoughts, their strong and aching cravings for one another, and their conflicted minds lead them on a roller coaster of emotions and feelings that neither can ignore, no matter how hard they try.

Loyalties will be tested, hearts will be broken, and careers will hang in the balance. Can Alex and Cassie keep their forbidden relationship a secret, or will they lose it all by Fraternizing?

I thoroughly enjoyed Fraternizing.  I've never read a book by C.C. Brown before and so I feel blessed that this was my first and it definitely has breed a love of her writing.  Now, that being said, I felt some aspects of the story to be a bit "unbelievable", so much so that it prompted me to do a little Marine research.  Turns out most of it was accurate at least to what could be found on the internet but enough of that let me just tell you about the story.

Sergeant Alex Cruz is up for promotion to Staff Sergeant.  He's out for a night at Coyote's to party with his boys and get trashed to celebrate making the Staff Sergeant select list.  Upon getting trashed, he is approached by a couple of girls that want to dance.  Now of course, dancing and being completely trashed doesn't lend itself to well to conversation so he ends up dancing with the sexy blond who he hasn't been able to take his eyes off all night.  He desperately wants to know what it would feel like to be inside her.  That is until a friend gets into a snag and he has to bail on his party without ever getting to know Blondie's name or get a phone number to be able to reach her for a second get together.

PFC Cassie Bennett had no idea what to expect when she got assigned to Comm School in Twentynine Palms, CA.  She had a blast with the stranger from Coyote's but figures she'll never see him again.  That is until formation the following morning in front of the school house where she comes face to face with her new instructors, one of which is none other than Sergeant Cruz.

Oh crap! Yeah, that doesn't even begin to describe what's going through both of their heads at this point and neither can shake the memory of what they felt like pressed up against one another or what it felt like to kiss the other.  They are a drug to one another and one that the Marine Corps will not allow to continue, this would be Fraternizing and is strictly prohibited.  As my husband explains it, there is an unwritten Military rule, it's called Two Up, Two Down where service members shouldn't date if they are more than two ranks above or below their own rank.  This leads the upper echelon to believe that the higher ranking member used their rank to influence the other into being with them.  This leads to numerous sexual harassment and EO complaints every year.

Now Cassie and Alex push the envelope as far as you can push it in order to try to be together.  They steal time where they can to touch one another.  Oh and the sex ... yes, the sex ... it is HOT!  They are scorching when they are together, you feel the heat coming off the book when these two are together.

Now we get to the parts in the story where I was scratching my head trying to figure out how in the world PFC Bennett is able to go anywhere for the weekend as a student not on a pass or on leave for the weekend.  How does her command not know where she is going?  You don't typically leave a military base/post, etc ... without paperwork being in place if you're outside a so many mile radius of your duty station and that's if you're a permanent fixture at that location, not a student.  More so, it seems highly unlikely to me that a career Marine with an exemplary record and up for promotion would just say "Screw it!" and go after a girl he is completely forbidden from seeing.  Of course, that doesn't mean this kind of thing never happens, because it certainly does and I've seen more than my share of it through the years around the military. Like I said before, I don't know how accurate some of the Marine elements of the story were and though it seemed unbelievable to me it was still a rockin' fun ride to feel the magnet attraction Alex and Cassie have toward one another.  Gotta love a man in uniform!  The ending to the story shocked the crap out of me and left me with a "what, that's the end of the story?" kind of feeling.  I tried flipping to the next page but there wasn't one.  The story has a major cliffhanger ending to say the least and I am now dying to see how C.C. Brown continues Alex and Cassie's story.

Just a book reading, writing loving, mommy and USMC wife! :)

I love to write, even if it isn't what is conventional and makes everyone feel giddy inside. I usually pull from dreams, or ideas that just thrust themselves into my head. I have what some would describe as a dry sense of humor, and I think its conveyed in my writing. I like to think I am a kick ass chick, but I can also be sensitive. I'm learning to grow thick skin, and in this field, it is definitely needed!

I won't put anything out that I am not absolutely proud of, but like E.L. James said, "I can't own people's reactions to it." Thanks for reading my work... I do appreciate it!
